Local doctors are getting more information on a preventive drug that is intended for people who are at higher risk of contracting HIV. The drug is called PrEP, and when taken daily by people in higher-risk lifestyles, it reduces the risk of HIV by up to 90-percent.
Although approved by federal regulators several years ago, the drug is only coming into wider use locally.
Sangamon County health officials are also planning a billboard and media campaign to encourage people at risk of HIV to talk to their doctor about the drug.
