State athletic officials say there’s been a noticeable dropoff in the number of referees for sanctioned sporting events.
The Illinois High School Association says the number of people who have paid the fee and taken the test to be licensed as referees is down around 10-percent over the past five years.
The IHSA says one factor may be the verbal abuse that referees often endure.
