Memorial Medical Center is celebrating the first kidney transplant chain in the 46-year history of the hospital’s transplant program.
A transplant chain involves a sequence of donors giving a healthy kidney to a stranger… with a relative of the recipient then donating a kidney to another person until eventually a match is found for every recipient in the chain.
Eight patients were involved in the chain, which unfolded over seven weeks in the fall of 2017. Six of the eight met for the first time in a gathering Wednesday at Memorial.
