Rauner Expresses Support for New Death Penalty Proposal

Governor Bruce Rauner is expressing support for a death penalty proposal that goes even farther than his original proposal of just a couple of weeks ago.

Rauner reintroduced the death penalty into the state’s political debate when he amended a gun bill to revive capital punishment for mass murderers or people who kill police.

Now a group of lawmakers has put forward their own standalone death penalty bill that would also apply to the murder of any first responder in the line of duty, including firefighters.

Rauner issued a tweet declaring that he agrees with that expansion of crimes eligible for the death penalty.
