Some Illinois lawmakers want to make sure that adult entertainment clubs are actually paying a tax that was assessed on them years ago. The so-called “pole tax” was originally expected to bring in a million dollars a year to be used for the fight against sexual assault.
But it’s bringing in less than half that amount. The tax is only being paid by around 40 establishments across the state, but one lawmaker says there are almost twice as many “gentlemen’s clubs” in Illinois.
A House committee has approved a measure calling for an audit to make sure the tax is being properly collected.
