The State Board of Elections has been ordered to take another look at allegations that Auditor General Frank Mautino misused campaign funds during his time as a Democratic state lawmaker. The board issued a $5,000 fine against Mautino for failing to turn over documents about hundreds of thousands of dollars in questionable campaign expenses.
The board said any further action would have to come from prosecutors. But an appeals court says the elections board is the appropriate place to rule on the merits of the original complaint.
It’s unclear what action the board could take against Mautino’s campaign committee… which has been dissolved.
