Governor Bruce Rauner is pushing legislation that would dramatically increase penalties for various acts of public corruption by elected officials or government employees.
The legislation would sharply increase the fine for bribery… from the current maximum of $25,000 up to $1 million… and would also increase penalties for illegal political activity on government property or improperly serving on state boards and commissions.
It’s unclear whether there is time to take up the legislation this spring… since some deadlines for legislative approval have already passed.
