The Adams County coroner is taking heat for his handling of cases involving people who can’t afford funeral or burial services… but the Sangamon County coroner says it is standard operating procedure.
Cinda Edwards says Sangamon County makes every effort to contact family members who can arrange to cover cremation or burial costs. But if no one can be located, remains are cremated and placed in a designated area at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
She says there are only a handful of such cases each year locally.
