House Approves ‘Fair’ Income Tax Resolution, Republicans Call It ‘Unfair’

An Illinois House committee has approved a resolution in support of the idea of a graduated income tax which Democrats have branded the “Fair Tax,” and which Republicans are calling an “Unfair Tax.”

House Speaker Mike Madigan says a progressive tax structure like the one endorsed by Democratic nominee for governor J.B. Pritzker would lower taxes for the middle class and force the wealthy to pay their fair share.

But Republicans say a tax hike on the wealthy will hurt small businesses and drive job creators out of the state.

The resolution is symbolic because such a change would require amending the Illinois Constitution, and it’s too late to put that question on this year’s ballot.
