One local leader says sooner or later, Capital Township will be merged with another governmental body… but the question is when, and with whom.
Right now, state law would allow Capital Township to be consolidated with the City of Springfield… since the two are within the same boundaries.
But County Clerk Don Gray… who also serves as Capital Township assessor… says county government already handles most Capital Township functions, and thinks it makes more sense for the county to take it over. Legislation to allow that could advance in the General Assembly this spring.
