The future of Springfield’s Bergner’s store is in doubt… now that it appears the chain’s parent company is about to go out of business. Bon-Ton Stores, which operates Bergner’s and several other retailers, had hoped to find a buyer to take over the company… but the only bids came from liquidators who would sell off the company’s assets.
That appears to indicate that closure of those stores is imminent, but there’s no word yet on an exact timeline.
The Springfield Bergner’s store was originally Myers Brothers… a family store that had operated in Springfield since 1865. The Myers family sold the store to the Bergner’s chain in 1978.
