A legislative working group studying gun issues and school safety has met for the first time. House and Senate Republicans and House Democrats are serving on the panel… which has started its work by considering several proposals for enhancing school safety, including behavioral threat assessments, information sharing among schools, and student tip lines.
Senate Democrats have not appointed members to the committee. Senate President John Cullerton says there are already a number of pending gun and safety bills that could be acted on immediately, and says there’s no need for another study group.
Governor Bruce Rauner was also absent from the group’s first meeting, as he was out of state for the recent birth of his first grandchild.
