The Illinois Department of Public Health is under fire for delays in processing applications from people seeking authorization to obtain medical marijuana.
State law says those applications should be processed within 30 days… faster for patients who are terminal.
But State Senator Heather Steans says it’s taking much longer. And she says that’s happening even though the state is sitting on more than $11 million in a fund that could be used to hire more staff to process those applications.
The health department blames the delays on application errors and a slow background check process.
