It’s been visible on the Springfield skyline for 50 years… but the large smokestack next to HSHS St. John’s Hospital will come down this year. The smokestack initially was part of the hospital’s medical waste incinerator… but after that was closed down in 2007, it’s been used for exhaust from hospital boilers and air conditioners.
The State Journal-Register reports that the 180-foot-tall smokestack will be torn down and that exhaust will be re-routed to other exit points.
The $2.4 million project is intended to improve the appearance of the St. John’s campus.
