Springfield Aldermen Reverse Course, Approve Sales Tax Hike

Your sales taxes are going up in Springfield after all.

Confronted with the prospect of deep budget cuts and few other alternatives, Springfield aldermen reversed course and approved Mayor Jim Langfelder’s quarter-percent increase in the city sales tax, to 8.75 percent. Two weeks ago, aldermen voted against the tax hike nine-to-one, but this time the vote was eight-to-three in favor… with Langfelder adding his own “yes” vote.

Even with that and additional budget cuts, the new city budget still has gaps, and Langfelder hopes the city council will approve a natural gas tax in two weeks.
