Carpenter Street Railroad Project Can Proceed, Race Riot Artifacts Will Be Preserved

The Carpenter Street segment of Springfield’s railroad relocation project can proceed after lengthy deliberations to ensure that artifacts from the 1908 race riots discovered near the tracks are preserved.

The Federal Railroad Administration has given the green light for work to continue.

Congressmen Rodney Davis and Darin LaHood say the approval will allow more progress on the 10th Street tracks while still ensuring the archeological remains of structures burned during the riots will be preserved, with only minimal disruption to the site.
