An East Alton man is dead after crashing his car while twice trying to speed away from police in Macoupin County. State police say they attempted to pull over 32-year-old Christopher Johnson in the town of Bunker Hill… but he drove off.
The trooper terminated the pursuit, but a Macoupin County deputy spotted the car and again tried to pull Johnson over.
Johnson continued driving at a high rate of speed and lost control of his car, striking a tree next to a nativity scene.
The car burst into flames and Johnson had to be extricated. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating the crash and trying to determine why Johnson was on the run.
