A longtime Sangamon County judge and prosecutor has died.
John Schmidt passed away early Tuesday in the Memorial Medical Center emergency room. Coroner Cinda Edwards says the death appears to be from natural causes.
Schmidt served as Sangamon County State’s Attorney and was appointed a circuit judge in 2010. He had just begun serving an appointment as an appellate court justice earlier this month. Schmidt was 52.
