The Illinois Department of Revenue is warning that the state could be on the hook for hefty fines unless lawmakers take action soon.
That’s because of federal rules requiring that taxes on aviation fuel must be used for airport and aviation-related projects.
A deadline to implement that provision has already passed, but state officials hope they can avoid tens of millions of dollars in penalties if lawmakers take up the issue in the next few weeks.
