The biggest challenge locally in the fight against the opioid overdose crisis is the lack of available treatment beds, according to Sangamon County Public Health Director Jim Stone.
President Trump recently declared the crisis to be a public health emergency, but that declaration did not trigger any additional federal funding.
While Stone says there have been some grants for outpatient programs, actual treatment beds remain in short supply, making it harder for people to get the help they need to battle their addiction.
