The Republican state senator who has been a thorn in Governor Bruce Rauner’s side for years will not seek re-election in 2018. In a statement, Senator Sam McCann said the Illinois Republican Party has lost its way under Governor Bruce Rauner and is, quote, “no longer recognizable.”
McCann specifically criticized Rauner for supporting taxpayer-funded abortions and signing an immigration bill that he says turns Illinois into a “sanctuary state.”
McCann says he will serve out the remainder of his Senate term, which expires in early 2019.
